I've watched all the Father Ted episodes with commentary, and apparently Mrs. Doyle is based on one of the writers' mother. And Fathers Stone and Noel are based on real priests they once met. Little-acknowledged fact is that Zardoz was produced in Ireland — in the massacre toward the end, they almost couldn't get the permit for guns and blanks, and one of the local crewmen said "oh, that shouldn't be too big a problem, my best friend is in the IRA". Fortunately, the permit passed before they called in a favour from the gun-runner.
My mate called DBATW "Half man, Half Hawkwind" - I think he may be onto something!
I can see that. I think he's on to something, as well.
